“Dachshund” is another one of the animations I did for the Real Ideas Studio documentary collaboration “Other Than” that premiered at Cannes.  The first story is about a little crippled dog that a couple got from the shelter.  It’s worth a peek.

Um, I have a cat. One of these is my cat, can you guess which one. I like the crazy million-cat-in-a-house photos at the end. I don’t think I could live in a house like that, but it would be fun to visit a house with a million attention-starved cats.

This is another one of the animations I did for the Real Ideas Studio documentary collaboration “Other Than” that premiered at Cannes.  It’s free to watch online if you want.  My friend Doug did this story.  I’m also needing some new animation hotline stories, so if anyone has anything they want to tell me, chances are I’ll post it really fast because I’ve been making some new animations lately.  The number is 212-683-2490.

I just got this message a few hours ago. It’s been really easy to pull messages straight from my desktop since I’ve installed this new messaging system.

This was for  the Internationales Trickfilm-Festival Stuttgart and it was a message left in German, so unless you can understand German, it’s difficult to understand.  I’m guessing that even if you do understand German it’s still difficult to understand.  Someone told me that he is talking about fear and about being afraid so I tried to make imagery that went with it as best as possible.

I’ve been telling people for a few years that I’m moving to Detroit, but then someone asked me if I’d ever been to Detroit.  Of course I’d never been to Detroit, I just had it in my head as the artists’ utopia.  So someone, I think Serena, told me that I should go to Detroit and check it out, then make a decision.  So I’ve been saying for months and months, maybe a year, that I’m going to go to Detroit, but I never go, so finally, not this weekend, but next weekend, I’m going to go.

This one was a little more involved and I was able to experiment a little bit more. I got this call this morning, but my new phone system makes it really easy to listen to and use the most recent voice mails.

I’ve started following job offers and posting references on a website called Thumbtack.com which has been helpful in letting people know that I am here and available to get hired for animation work. It seems to be a pretty widely used site, at least for people looking for animation in the New York area.

I haven’t done any new animations in quite a while, but I just went to Ottawa Animation Festival (#OIAF) last weekend and had such a good time and was inspired by so many people working so hard at their craft that I started to feel like all I’ve been doing is commissioned work and haven’t been working on my personal work as hard as I could be. I was supposed to go to this animators’ party this afternoon, but I think they’ll understand if I skipped it to do some animating.

I’ve had this message for a while, it is Kevin Hosey’s story from the Hint Fiction Anthology. It was something nice and simple to get me back into the groove of things.

Whew. So long since a fresh new Animation Hotline video. It felt so good to do whatever I wanted to do and not have to try to make sure it looked good or looked right and could experiment and make mistakes and just have fun.

I have a chance to go to Cannes this year with the Animation Hotline, so I’ve got two things. First, I need people to leave messages about ‘The Other’. See the website for a more detailed description of what I’m looking for. But if I choose your message it will be played and premiered at Cannes in May 2012. The second thing is that I’m looking for help to fund me attending a networking workshop at the festival (Cannes) so if you know anyone who wants to help with that, again, information on the website.

I’ve been watching a bunch of Queen videos on youtube lately and I told my friend about it. Today when he came over he said, “Did you just draw Freddie Mercury?” Um, wow, yeah, I guess I did.

I used some new techniques with this one. The last scene has three layers, the image, a mask of the person walking and a still image of another painting. I haven’t really used a lot of post-production in the past, but it was nice to try different things and layer the images.

A little light on the color, but sometimes I feel like I rely too heavily on color and sometimes I need to just make something with a simple line and little or no color.

Electric Literature had me do one of the Single Sentence Animations for them. They give you a sentence from one of their stories and then let you do what you want with it. The sound is a high school show choir singing a rendition of Surfing USA, it’ll make more sense if you read the story.

I know this isn’t so much using the chalkboard, but sometimes it’s fun to switch it up a little bit and try something different.

I believe the ethnologist and engineer Raine Borg said it best with his statement, “A key is a symbol of all forces that open and close, bind and release. It stands for liberation and incarceration.”

I didn’t stick to the narrative on this one and instead just drew images of a traditional holiday meal. I forgot the pumpkin pie though.
